I've decided to add the gismu as a lesson on Smart.fm, and I wanted to
discuss this with rodo.

First, I'd like to invite anyone interested in helping to complete the
lesson to do so. I'm not certain how collaboration works, but I do know it's
possible.

Second, I have a question as to formatting for the individual items, that
being, which entry method would be better for learners?

1) All-inclusive, i.e.:

Item:
text: klama
translation: x1 travels to x2 from x3 via route x4 by means of x5

2) Individual, i.e.:

Item:
text: lo klama
translation: A traveller

Item:
text: lo se klama
translation: A traveller's origin

Item:
text: lo te klama
translation: A traveller's destination

Item:
text: lo ve klama
translation: A route travelled

Item:
text: lo xe klama
translation: A method of travelling

3) Both 1 and 2.

Lastly, seeing as Smart.fm's English text-to-speech will incorrectly
pronounce Lojban words, and assuming that no language pronounces things
exactly as Lojban does, audio needs to be recorded for each entry so that
learners hear the words as they are meant to be heard. So, should each
contributor record the audio for the entries s/he contributes, or should one
person be selected to do all the audio?

Addendum the second: Apparently, I have to invite people for collaboration,
which requires that any one that wishes to collaborate needs to either be
following me or be enrolled in a goal I created, so if you wish to, do one
of those and I'll invite you to collaborate.

I haven't taken a hard look at the options available for smart.fm, but I'd
say from my personal study, I prefer the concept on one side, all the
information about it on the other side, and then an example of usage on a
third side if possible.

As for collaborative audio, another platform that could be used (once they
add lojban, of course) is dict.cc, which already streamlines user-driven
online mp3 recording and verification. Dict.cc databases are always
available for download.

So, you vote all-inclusive, then?

And as for the audio, dict.cc wouldn't be of any help, due to the simple
fact that it doesn't have lojban. If anyone does already have audio of the
1200 or so gismu, THAT would help.

Um, it's the gismu list. Just say the gismu. possibly with lo and
se,te,ve,xe in front. The lesson page shows examples.

Using my previous example, the script for "klama" would be:
klama
lo klama
lo se klama
lo te klama
lo ve klama
lo xe klama

And so on with the other gismu, excluding the te, ve and xe for the gismu
that don't have those places.

Also, I've had an idea as to the lesson format. Since items can be used in
multiple lessons, it's relatively easy to make one lesson for all three-
which also helps out learners, who could then choose how they want to learn
the gismu.

As such. The current lesson "Lojban gismu", will contain all the items as in
3), and two more lessons created: "Lojban gismu - place structure" would be
as 1), and "Lojban gismu- sumti" would be as 2).

So, 1) all-inclusive = Lojban gismu - place

2) Individual = Lojban gismu -

Also, you can send them as one continuous file or split them up
individually, or even, if you have Audacity, as an audacity project with
each utterance in it's own channel. The first is less work for me, the
second less for me, and the last somewhere in the middle.

Just as an update, I've managed to get through the gismu list to baxso,
included all the sumti (as in <baxso>, <lo baso>, <lo se baxso>) for each of
the gismu. That equates to 32 gismu and 87 sumti so far. Seeing as my butt
really hurts from sitting in this chair for so long, I'm taking a break for
today- I'll see about getting through another 32 or so gismu tomorrow.

None but the first two- bacru lo bacru lo se bacru, and badri lo badri lo se
badri- have audio recorded for them, so if you are using any of the lessons,
don't pay attention to the computer voice- it's guaranteed to pronounce them
worngly.

I would very much appreciate any contributions any of you care to make,
either by helping make the individual items- which requires typing each one
in, BY HAND, or submitting audio for the gismu. The more work I have to do
myself, the longer it's going to take, and I would really like to have this
finished before 2011.

Okay, so in the desire to put some kind of organization to the audio
recording bit, I'm going to "dole out" sections of the gismu list.

I believe there are five people doing recordings including myself. Assuming
that's correct, here's the sections for everybody:
Me: bacru - daspo
Eppcott: dasri - kagni
Steven Belknap: kajde - nuzba
James: pacna - spisa
Sara: spita - zvati

That's appox. 1/5th of the list for each of us. This is merely a suggestion
of course, but I make the suggestion in order to help make sure that none of
us record audio for the same gismu. Also, I could be wrong as to the amount
of people doing the audio, which would obviously change things a bit.

also, i'll be picky because .i mi prami do: i've studied my first thirty
item lesson and i think pretty much all final, unaccented 'a' sounds seem to
be rendered like the english schwa at the beginning and end of the word
'America' ... i.e. it {bajra} sounds like {bajry}

Well, except for the first and last, the list refers to just the audio, so
all the entries of the other ones are available as far as making the entries
is concerned. As far as the audio is concerned, I am unaware of anyone
actually making any so far, other than myself and Matt. and even there the
audio isn't done past my section, so, unless anyone else has complaints,
feel free to work on whatever you want?

Regarding <.e>: It means "and" for sumti, as in <mi .e do prami la.lojban>,
but I think that go'i would be a better response, as, while <.e> is
understandable within the context, I don't believe it is a grammatical
utterance, while <go'i> in this case would mean "I am talking about doing
audio, making the entries, or both."

But I'm trying to be helpful in another way... I believe in modular
workflows and want to help other people get started, so I printed out all
the sumti inversions and gismu (that is, the eventual entire list), and put
them in this publicly-editable spreadsheet:

sumti forms. For example, fill in the ??? below:

lo klama = ???
(potential flashcard translation: A traveller)
lo se klama = ???
(potential flashcard translation: A travel destination)
etc.

english glosses for each gismu's sumti.

2) If anyone wants to take on a section of terms to upload and/or attach
audio to, you can put your name in the 'editing' column and update the chart
when you're done. I've found that smart.fm's content listing view doesn't
display whether or not a custom mp3 has been attached to a card.

This is a really useful free resource. We currently have about 150 cards
completed... if we keep this average and add a few more contributers, it
could be done in a few months.

1. the term (either a gismu like {klava} or a gismu inversion like {lo se
klava}
2. the definition (plain gismu have them already, inversions need them
extracted from the gismu definition)
3. an MP3

Go to the same spreadsheet, and claim a swath of terms to record mp3s for.
Be bold. In the end, mp3 files can be uploaded from your computer or via
URL, so feel free to record even if you don't want to upload the files
yourself as long as you can send the files or upload them somewhere.

Once a term has a definition and an mp3, it can be uploaded. Here's how to
do it:

as a favorite and await for approval to become a deck contributor (you can

Sending me a message in Smart.fm is the only way I know that you want to be
a contributor, so it's not really optional. Unless by "speed up" you mean

You'll need to delete the duplicate entries you made, as you're the only
person that can.

In order to upload audio to an existing entry, you click on edit for that
item. It looks to me like you tried editing them by clicking on the add item
button.

Once a term has a definition and an mp3, it can be uploaded. Here's how to
do it:
1) First register at smart.fm

then add the deck2 <http://smart.fm/goals/179543> as a favorite and await for approval to become a deck contributor (you can
also 'follow' and/or message .aionys. <http://smart.fm/users/aionys>

of the list), and select the Place Structure goal.

2b)Click on the "My Items" link at the bottom of the page, go to "Created
Items", select the sumti items you created (the ones that begin with <lo>),
click "Add Items to Goal" (the underlined down arrow at the bottom of the
list), and select the Sumti goal.

3) When you've finished uploading, update the spreadsheet.

I guess then what happens is when you click 'edit' on a card you didn't
create, it copies that card and gives you ownership of the new one-- so I
can only delete my own recordings' items, not alter the ones I'm trying to
fix? Either way, I'm really drawing a blank-- I can't find 'delete'
anywhere... It may be that my chinese internet is too slow? It takes about a
minute to load the list for me and often the 'order by' and 'show' options
don't load whatsoever.

I'm getting to the point of adding the brodV gismu, and I have some
questions about them.

Should I make sumti entries for them? i.e. lo broda, lo se broda....

If so, should I make all five sumti places, just the first, or somewhere in
between?

Should I make a seperate entry for each one, or a single entry for all five?

My inclination is to ONLY make the gismu entries, one for each, and to not
make any sumti entries at all, mainly due to the fact that the place
structures of these gismu are variable.

entries.

That's how the SE cmavo work, yes. That's why {lo xe benji} is "a means of
transmission".

But I don't see the point of bringing that up. The 5 brodV are bridi
variables, like the ko'V pro-sumti variables. They don't have a set
structure. Depending on the context in which they are used, the brodV gismu
can have anywhere between 0(?) and infinity places.
