Using TTS to create lojbanic spoken text

Hi there, I'm trying to use Text to Speech software to create some
lojbanic text:
I've put an example here: http://www.dentato.com/sutra1_alpha.mp3
I'd really appreciate comments and suggestions.

They sound pretty good to me. I hear "denba bu"instead of "denpa bu"
and I would like a more clear "e" at the end of "jbopre", but that may
be just me.

IMO it says (x) instead of (').

I agree. It sounds like Eva is saying "coxo" instead of "co'o". I didn't
notice it anywhere else.

Sometimes she does and sometime she doesn't. It would need more tweaking.

Unfortunately I'll stop exploring the Ivona voices, They told me that
to distribure audio files, even for non-commercial uses like producing
lojban examples, I need to buy a commercial licenses. While I didn't
mind to invest a 100$ or so in an hobby like Lojban, I can't afford a
comercial license (that I guess will be in the order of the
thousands).

Too bad. Probably they make enough money and don't need to hobbyst
users like me.

How much would a commercial developer's license cost?  Would they consider a lower-priced
licence for non-profts?  Perhaps, other lojbanists would be prepared to chip in. I would
certainly consider it.

just had a chance to listen to these. That's pretty freaking awesome.
Sucks about the license thing. Is there no free-ware/open source software
for doing this sort of thing?

"eSpeak" is an open-source TTS with a lojban voice which you can
experiment with:

http://espeak.sourceforge.net

The name of the lojban voice is "jbo".

The current development version has a few improvements. It is at:
http://espeak.sf.net/test/latest.html

If you have suggestions for corrections, please tell me.

eSpeak uses formant synthesis and therefore the quality is not as good.
However, eSpeak can also be used as a front-end for "mbrola" diphone
voices, which sound more human. Perhaps you find one which has the
necessary set of phonemes for lojban. Information on eSpeak + mbrola
is at:
http://espeak.sourceforge.net/mbrola.html

I've installed espeak as well but the problem is in the quality of
sounds. To give an idea of the difference I've made a comparison file
between espeak, ivona, acapela and oddcast.

http://drop.io/uhjdnj3/asset/rutni-mp3

I'll probably continue playing with TTS. It would be great if
jbovlaste had an example pronunciation for each entry!

yeah, some of those definitely sounded better than others. This sounds like
an interesting project. If we found a good TTL program/voice it doesn't
seem like it would be all that hard to write a script to go through and
create a wav file for every word on jbovlaste.

That'd be cool.

Sounds like one of those robots in the 1970s science fiction movies,
just before they say "doi jenmi .i ko daspo ro remna"

apparently there are a "variants" on the voices. maybe I'll have to play
with some of them to try to get something more natural sounding.

Yes, the female variant is not a good choice. eSpeak makes a "female"
voice from the male voice by just increasing the pitch and adjusting
the speech formants.

If you are using the development version of eSpeak from:
http://espeak.sf.net/test/latest.html

try the variant "m7".

espeak -v jbo+m7
