Lojban In General

I'm sorry, but I just do not get it.

I'm sure that creating a consistent orthography is a fascinatin' and
absorbing artistic project. But what in the world is the sense of
taking a language whose syntax is by designed unlike any other, and
whose vocabulary is already a challenge to learn using familiar
letters for (mostly) familiar sounds, and making it even MORE arcane
by writing those letters in a completely new script?

Churchill said of Russia, "It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery,
inside an enigma."

Well, this orthography would be the enigma cloak for the riddle of
lojban vocabulary wrapped in the mystery of lojban syntax.

A completely valid point. As you said, it's been fun to work on just
as a project, so it doesn't really need any further justification.
But even aside from that, the 'familiar' letters are only familiar for
those who are raised speaking a languages which is written with a
latin alphabet. This kind of 'weighting' defeats Lojban's ideal of
being as culturally neutral as possible, and a script which is
unrelated to any other is one of the ways to approach that ideal.
That said, the aforementioned 'ideal' was really only the inspiration
for this little project - the enjoyment of the process itself was the
main motivation for me :-)

On another note, if anyone's still interested at all... :-) the third
revision of the the script is online here:
http://www.lojban.org/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=Lakmir.%27s+Orthography+v3&bl
I'm quite pleased with this one, I feel that it's very close to being
finalised. If anyone has any further comments or recommendations, I
will take them into consideration, otherwise rev4 will just be a
careful aesthetic tweak and then i'll upload it as Truetype for
everyone to play with.
Thanks for your comments Dave :-)

I still don't like p/b, and I still think the vowel pairs idea is a good one.
I'm going to pretend the break-for-accent is optional, since I
/really/ don't like that.
I'm happy with the new sy. family, and with the rest of it as well.

Yep, optional loop-breaking is a definite go-ahead for the final
revision. If you're not a fan of the break method your other options
are breaking and then attempting to resume your interlerfu line, or
going back over your word/sentence when its done. I opted away from
pairing the vowels because I feel that they're somehow more
fundamental to the language in a way, and that they benefit from a
stronger visual distinction than a diacritic mark. Notice that in
terms of shape, they're sort of paired anyway.
I too, am extremely pleased that I (with notable assistance from

  1. lojban, ki'e rodo) was able to come up with a better solution for

sy.. The bar and a squiggle were really pretty meh.
As for p/b, you're quite entitled to not like it, but short of someone
presenting a ground-breaking alternative, it'll stay, i think it
serves its function.
