It seems to me that it's very easy to forget the last vowel of a
gismu. Besides being redundant, it's in an unemphasized syllable, and
tends to be pronounced lazily. So I figure I could just look up all
gismu by the first four letters, and just ignore any errors, or
perhaps highlight the last vowel. Does this sound like a good idea?

To me this sounds like a very good idea.

There are two more things I tend to forget/misremember as well:
- Switching vowels in cmavo like: a'o/o'a
- Switching second two letters in gismu with CCVCV order: cfika => cifka

I wonder if this kind of mistakes are common.

At least the second could easily be detected.

Hmm. Even the second can't always be detected. There are 36 gismu that
have another gismu with such a switched pair of letters. (E.g. gerku,
greku; tirna, trina). But there's still plenty of room to look for
mistaken transpositions.

(There are 26 gismu in a (rectu, certu) pair, 32 in a (nilce, nelci)
pair, and 20 in a (tsani, tsina) pair.)
