webserver hosed?

I got a message this morning saying that a jbovlaste entry had been edited, so
I clicked on the link. I get a window saying "jbovlaste.lojban.org contacted.
Waiting for reply..." and it hangs there for a minute or two, then comes up
with the page. Anyone else having this problem?

Pierre

lojban.org is hosted on amazon cloudfront and we are currently experiencing cpu
steal, that's why the website is so slow - sometimes so slow that it wont work
at all :-(

Well, if you go with the Lojban seltau-tertau word order, that'd be "a
cloud type of in-front thing" and a "CPU stealer". ;)

No one has answered seriously or sensibly, because both
questions are easily answered by Google.

An unreasonable, snarky and unhelpful response to a perfectly reasonable question!

Is it really so difficult to write in language that doesn't require us to
go to Google, dictionaries and encyclopedias to figure out what's meant?

No wonder newbies who are not savvy in IT, linguistics or logic are scared
away from lojban!

We actually use EC2, not cloudfront; in both cases the answer is "a
hosting service".

CPU steal is when other virtualized servers are getting CPU time
such that whatever virtualized server you're looking at isn't
getting as much as it should. If that means nothing to you, then:
I'm not getting as much CPU on lojban.org as I pay for.

I did google "cloudfront cpu steal" and could not figure out from the answers
what it is. ga'idai se'anai. I got hits in which "cloud" happened to be
followed by "front" and "cpu" and "steel" were in the same page. I've seen
the word "cloud" in a computing context but haven't figured out what it
means.

It was intended to be none of the above.

I didn't know what the answers were, so I typed the query into
Google and got sufficient explanation to be content that I knew
enough for myself. I'm still not an expert, and hence felt
ill-equiped to give a detailed explanation. Referring the
questioner to an alternative source of information seemed the
best idea.

Any more than apparently being completely ignored? OK, I won't
bother replying at all, then, unless I feel I'm an expert.

No wonder people might feel that this group simply ignores them.

Pierre, thank you for that clarification. As I've just written
elsewhere, I'm not enough of an expert to answer your questions,
but I do observe that you've already done more homework than
most poeple would do. Please don't take this the wrong way, but
my answer would've been completely different had I known you had
made some effort before asking the question.

Again, my intent was not to be snarky or dismissive. If it appeared
that way to you then I apologise unreservedly.

I was intending to be "snarky" but that was only because I'm used to dealing
with my computer illiterate friends and family that are always asking
questions that could very easily me answered by google. I didn't realize
that you had already googled and come up empty handed.

I found the following which you might find useful:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_CloudFront

As for cpu steal, this is what happens when one physical machine hosts
multiple services and one service starts hogging all of the cpu thus
"stealing" cpu cycles from the other services.

I had exactly the same two questions, but realized I could Google them, and
found enough of an answer to satisfy my mild curiosity. Just FYI.
