Hard to believe in the war, with these friendly people around us." I gaze at their various clothing, the happy flushed faces. "Where there was one Cave, now there are two. Each separately watches shadow-play & shadow-act. They do not make themselves known beyond the threshold, nor do they speak to those of the other Cave..." The bill arrives. ((Offer-hoping but not give-agreeingly)) mutually looking. Then i see someone i know. Cornelius, a Japanese musician, is a typical Lojbani. ((He named himself after a character in "Planet of the Apes.)) After greeting us, he sits down. Says, "Have you seen the new Lojban book?" "In or about Lojban," i ask. "Both." "Oh really?" Djuna says. "Another one?" "Yes, by the 'Purple' Poem-Producer." "Is it any good?" i say. He hems & haws. "It's different," he finally says. "Good," says Djuna, "We needed a second book in Lojban." "If only it could have been written by someone else," i mutter. Cornelius pushes up his 'chimps'. "Why don't YOU write the next one?" Much later; darkness through the triangular windows. Djuna is saying, "After tea with the vicar, during which we talked of interesting sexual practices, the conversation shifted to the subject of Ghosts. 'Although i hardly understand them, I still believe in them,' he said. I asked why, in some surprise. 'I have seen one.' 'Where?' 'In the Sound Garden.' That was all he would say." Pause. "Cool," i say. "Yup," says Cornelius. "I know I sure believe." But i say, "For all the ghosts i have personally seen, i am not a believer in ghosts." Djuna says, "He doesn't believe in material possessions, either, but you should see all the junk he has." "Accumulation happens," i reply. "I know a ghost story," says Cornelius. "Go on!" "Once there was a man who travelled to the other cave. At the first gate he lost his gismu list. "Ooh!" says Djuna. "At the second he lost the power to distinguish true from false." "That's bad but--" i say. "At the third gate--" "Nothing is worse than that!" i interrupt. He smiles. "The whole earth lost the power to distinguish true from false." "That's too scary! Enough ghost stories," says Djuna. Then she says, "I want a croissant." Djuna & Cornelius are explaining the song in that language which was the cause of dividing the two caves into here & the Other Place, to the Vicar, who has just now joined us, as the only thing left to us of that person who went to the Other Place & became one with the ghosts. "It expresses the anguish of the process of a rainbow's fading in the sprinkler-spray," says the Vicar. Cornelius says, "It expresses atoms of silence as they oscillate & fight amongst each other." Djuna says, "It's like a picture made of butterfly wings. We know butterflies here don't die, so it's strange to see the wings without a butterfly." I say, "The time of a song is one-seventh the time of a coffeehouse. The time of a coffeehouse is one-seventh the time of an artificial language. The time of an artificial language is one- seventh the time of a state. And states die." The Vicar says, "It's enough." Later. Me & Djuna have already gone. Cornelius & the Vicar are discussing philosophy. He says, "Regarding 'the' & 'aÕ, it is said: 'If you can't be with the one you love, love a person you're with.' Likewise, beliefs. I think when one weakly-understands the religion-source, one clings to beliefs in the form of words." The Vicar disagrees. "Just because a believer wants to verbalize their beliefs, that doesn't mean they're ignorant of the religion-source. Rather, among those of a given religion, there are those who are more deeply experienced & those who merely repeat its forms. And not only among the religious--among the unreligious also. Unbelief has its conventions too, you know." Pause. Cornelius considers what the Vicar has just said. The walls are wood of an auburn color. "There is a time in the experience of the religion-source, when the mystery seems too wild for any containment. I guess I want to say that THAT time is the sole basis for the power to judge false & true..." "Mystery can be shared," the Vicar says, "That is why Art exists. And formal religion is really only the lifelong acknowledgement of the sacredness of Art." "Then why are churches such ugly places?" "Politics." Cornelius says, "The time of a state is one-seventh the time of a creosote bush!" The croissant half on the table has the shape of the letter Vau. Later still. Cornelius is alone in the coffeehouse. The clock ticks. He thinks the following: I remember the city like today. Far away. Long ago. Twisting, narrow streets. Ancient buildings. Twilight & fog. I came on a small airplane. She had told me to meet her in front of the main post office. I left my stuff in the pre-arranged room & then went there by subway. I waited. I had come 2000 miles to see if she would keep her word. I wondered if I was making a mistake. Whether, even if she did meet me, it would mean what IÕd thought it did. And now I understand. She was going to meet me; & it wouldn't mean what I thought it would. The City has taken more than one magician...A certain magician's studies had led him to conclude that Language was the key. But what was Language? He immersed himself in the "Frankensteins of Speech" until he could find the toymaker impulse in slang or literary language & the authentic change-force in the usage of Esperantists. The thing-intended, mixed-with the thing-compelled. Here was the thing laid bare. He went out into the winding, narrow streets like a ghost with a mission. He found the Cathedral of the Golden Soapbubble. Went inside. Lit a candle. He "stood on a mountain with wings & leapt". Whiteglove handbell music. They say he stopped using natural language after that. Thereafter he was irregularly heard of among the city's innumerable cabals & conspiracies. Then he wasn't anymore. We believe it is not true that he was a leaver "without doornoise" of the Language Idea Affair. We believe in time he will return. Two objects dominate the sky over the City: a six-hundred-foot statue of a praying mantis, & the Castle, which is centuries old & mostly abandoned. The statue was built by invaders. Horned, Cornelius is descending from a guided tour of the Castle, when he notices music coming out of a quaint little teahouse nearby. A familiar song. It's "Exodus", sung by Piaf. Amazement. Sees birds wheeling over the cathedral against a sky about to rain. He stops walking in front of the bar he'd just been about to go into, & turns back. As soon as he steps inside, it begins to rain heavily. The song finishes. A different one begins, also by Piaf. He has never been so happy. He's looking at the batik cloth of the curtains when there's a tap on his shoulder. Turns; no one is there. Turns back, & finds a card in front of him! Reads the following: "YOU ARE INVITED. At midnight, underneath the Eiffel Tower, on Walpurgisnacht." Thinks to himself: "What does this mean?! Two nights from now. Should I go? Why not!" Two nights later he's not surprised to find himself riding the last train of the day. It goes to the Sound Garden, where a one-third replica of the Eiffel Tower stands. The radio crackles in a language with many consonants. He inhales the soft night air. A few have gathered; more will come. Will he learn secrets soon in this place of shadows & dreams? Tragic city. City of many long sorrows & ancient wrongs. Beautiful city. City of many architectural styles. City of whispering empty-streets & silent crowds. City of sorcerors. City of strange music impossible to remember after hearing it. City where lost things go. City of secrets. City of discoveries. Her smooth brown body reflects the light from thirteen candles. The sodium lights are pinkly golden. The top of the tower is lost in darkness. The ones who have come here begin to form a ring silently under the direction of a woman in a bird mask, who has already given him an American president mask. The mask makes it hard for him to see. It's not as warm anymore but his breath condenses inside the mask & runs out in drops from time to time. He listens to the chanting. "Disturbed by what we saw through frightened eyes, we despaired." Another: "The world is a machine of dirt & pain." They clasp hands. She says: "It's a shell! A shell around goodness. Inside is where we belong." All: "Don't believe in the Nut!" It amuses Cornelius, & also scares him a little. A little while later he & she have moved apart from the others. He asks her if she's cold. "I made it all up. It's what they expected," she says. They're walking in the strange half-light, under trees that mildly wave. "You mean there isn't any group?" "Naturally." "I have to admit it was a good joke," says Cornelius. "A gathering needs focus as its size increases," she says. "Whether or not it's a true idea?" They look at each other. Green is the night. Later on, they've built a fire. Talking idly, sharing wine. They bring up the widespread nightmare plague, which everyone calls "Birds of Shade". Cornelius thinks they're caused by too much identifying with the times. The Bird Woman thinks it's all due to intelligent elephants from Betelgeuse. It's not yet dawn. Soon the trains will be running again. "Once I loved a madwoman," she says. "Much but not mutually. She wanted to move out west. I helped her. She was pregnant & unemployed. I filled the car with her stuff & said goodbye never to hear from her again except once from a mutual friend, who said she was living on the street in San Francisco. I didn't do anything, alas. There was no way to find her. So I let it happen, what anguished me so long. The story lacks an ending. The end." The spires of the City are becoming sharper & darker, against the sky of a color seen nowhere else. The fire has dwindled to coals. The wine is all gone. They've run out of stories. Cornelius understands that after he has left the Sound Garden & returned home, he only will remember that his mind was filled with the thought of the unborn child, like a song whether reed or brass meaning what it meant then & now; everyone will leave; the Bird Woman after gathering flowers in her skirt will stumble repeatedly on the steep hillside & let some of them fall & there will be white splotches shining in the pale dawn at each place she tripped. They say the Birds of Shade were created like this: Long ago, the King sent his ambassador to the people of the City. They met in a great chamber of the Castle, with stained glass windows. Angry arguing. The Ambassador was thrown through one of the windows. And war resulted. The City lost its freedom for 300 years. And the arguing words of the Ambassador remained with the people of the City in the form of nightmares; whoever passes here a night will be plagued by them. It's one of the things this place is famous for. The Bird Woman, whose real name is Kater^ina Vltava, walks past a white coffeehouse called "Betelgeuse". She no longer wears the mask. For a moment she considers the coffeehouse. Long ago it was the home of a literary group called ((Elephant|"The Elephants". Because they "remembered")). Kafka was sometimes a member. He'd quietly write in a corner off by himself & wouldn't show it to anyone. She speculates that he was working on his famous bug story. She goes on by. Approaching the statue of a two-headed angel, she says, "The subject is under observation," in perfect Lojban. Cornelius sits bolt upright. Bewildered. Dim yellow & smoky air. The hubbub has resumed. He thinks: "Do I wake or sleep? This is where I am, but what's that? The Internet? Dreamtime? The world allows a certain cartouche. Then it doesn't. I could be a butterfly dreaming I'm not. Or the winding, narrow streets of a city. The nightful environment says so. These walls are wood! This table is marble! And I am flesh & bone!" He notices a nearby clock. Says, "By the Copenhagen interpretation, the Narrator by observing alters the fictive reality of this coffeehouse; notwithstanding which. however, I am definitely late for class." After a series of earthquakes & fires the City is almost deserted. I carry a shard of blue glass in my pocket, believing it's lucky. No one else believes this. The coffeehouse is still the same. I go in. Hot mixed with cold, dark with light, full with empty there. Think i see a friend, who says, "I don't like the word for 'computerÕ. I'll use 'remember-machine' instead." I said, "Likewise, i don't like the word 'desire'. I could use 'mind-hunger' or 'possess-think'. But will i be understood?" "A language is strong when the controlling idea is variousness." I worry about my car trouble as i return to the City, where more ghosts than living dwell. "I am eternal butterfly; across the all-field runs my curvaceous course to the end of the game. I watch the process of changing & vanishing. This confuser-ball is to me an odor of feces-mixed with-roses. I don't notice what is eaten or what it's food for. I don't crave duration, nor do I know what time it is," the jukebox sang in the coffeehouse under the monorail. Kater^ina stood outside & listened. She smelled coffee, oil, & the distant river. Night was drawing on. Out of the shadows came a man in a pigeon-colored cloak. She shrank back. The sound of boots. A whiff of citrus. Then he went in. She waited, & went in herself. Signup for the open mike had just started. So she signed. Her turn came after his. She noticed his name: 'The Vicar'. She ordered green tea. Thinking about her panelak, which had been forbidden by the government on account of the danger of its collapsing in the wake of the still slightly continuing earth tremors. She couldn't go back. Two tables over, the Vicar was drinking strawberry milk. She went back to the signup, scratched out her name & wrote ÔThe SheriffÕ. "Hey people! It's great to be back! Our "sound garden" is now all gathered. As the Poet says: 'Arma virumque cano.' Or: 'Time is an ocean but it ends at the shore.' Yeah! Thank you, thank you. First I'll read a little something. This is a poem about the power of the Word. It's called: 'I remember my name'. Under the happy monorail I remember my name. Poet. One who is in the habit of translating time into the language of women & men. Uses a beige computer to sing sweetly of the lover's tragedy (drat!). Will I again wear the mask? Is temporary your absence from me, O Open Door!" said the Vicar. Applause. Kater^ina stood when her name was called. And moved to the front. Looked out. Smelled cigarettes. She said, "Greater profundity than that, cannot be conceived of." The Vicar looked like he'd seen a ghost. "Everything's unhidden, Over There. A pigeon Over There can cross. I a dwelling-place may find (wonder!)(pride!)(mild hope!), for the Birds of Shade fail their trying, Over There," she read. "You're supposed to be dead!" he cried at the beginning, then fell silent. Someone said, "It's a double performance piece." ((Now the dream divides.) In one version she finds that he has left & only half a glass of milk remains at the table. Later on, she breaks into his apartment & lives happily ever after. (In the other version) she finishes reading.)) He finishes his milk. For awhile they regard each other, with anticipation, but reluctantly. The coffeehouse has seen mental combats before. The sky has turned new colors. The coffeehouse again. Cool, gray days make us want coffee & talk. Djuna is wearing a long turquoise dress & her reddest lipstick. I'm wearing a black coat i bought in New Orleans; it's a hundred years old. She drinks a decaf latte. I drink a smoky flavored tea. We greet our old friend The Stranger who asks us what we've been up to. Djuna says, "A Garden Party for millionaires." I say, "We talked about what could be done to stop the Media from harassing the families of victims." This makes Djuna uncomfortable. "At a table set for eleven," she says sadly, "the Twelfth guest is Death." I say, "I remember another party. There, a man was describing how he got away with murder. In a bar, this veteran of the Vietnam War had been startled by another customer. He acted too quickly with the result that without thinking he used his gun. Dead man. But when the police got there they told him the man he had killed was wanted for shooting an officer. They were glad he was dead. So they only charged him with discharging a firearm within the city limits. This is the story as i heard it." The Stranger says, "I used to have answers. Big answers & little answers & medium-size answers. Not anymore." Djuna says, "Is that being wiser or just middle-aged?" Under the City there are tunnels. People dwell there. Mole People. Katr^ina is one of them. The sadness of the lightless ones. Their despair, tell it. Never to return to the upper air. Hated, feared, rejected. A secret life, cruel in compulsion. A second level, unknown to the first. Unsafe to sleep. You listen & listen. Throw something & hear the knowledge. Carrying things to throw. All the time hungry, sore, tired. People just lie down & give up. And you stumble across them in the dark. And sometimes you have to fight. He was born in a secluded suburb with winding, narrow streets. Steep hills. A rich part of the city. As a child he had everything. Went to a private school. Got into the usual trouble. Chemical or otherwise. Which is how he heard about the tunnels & the Mole People. Some of them were drug associates. They would talk to him about life in the tunnels. How the people down there were organized into bands for survival. Even parent with children. Kids who spent their entire lives without sunlight. He began to feel a strange disquiet. It was curiosity. Before having sex, he made her shower three times. Her skin actually changed color. They kept the lights low & didn't hurry. Afterwards, she said, "Will you take me away with you?" "Of course," he said. "You don't know what you're saying." He kissed her. "So?" "Listen!" she said gravely & fearfully. "I want you to get rid of my keeper." "Can't we just leave?" "He will hunt us down. I know it." He gulped. "I'll kill him for you," he said sadly. Theu met again at the two-headed sculpture. "Here?" he said in surprise. She nodded. "There are entrances everywhere. The way down is free." They moved into the secret opening. "But getting back, that's sometimes a job." They climbed down a slope that was cold & damp, in silence. Lessening light. At the bottom, he put on some funny-looking goggles. "What are those?" she asked. "To see in the dark," he said. Under the City. Human meets human. First one thinks: "Can this strange-one-met be a useful member of our tunnel community?" The second one thinks, "Can I mangle this guy without getting hurt myself?" The struggle in the dark is unequal. All the "track rabbits" (rats) watch with interest. Kater^ina fearfully waits off to one side. Back further, other Mole People too are curious onlookers. Then the Vicar is holding a gun. Everything can be fixed with a few bullets--they say. Her keeper speaks: "I am like the bird that sings by day & by night. How I came Underground, is no matter. Nor my name. Soon I learned the uses of the dark. I was strong & needed by the others. I became their leader. I decided things for them. The spraypaint pictures you see in the undergrate better-lighted places are mine. I also wrote puppet plays. These plays expressed the hopes & fears of the Mole People. I'm proud of them. But I always felt a tension between what I had to say & the cold requirements of Art. Always I had to write more simply than I wanted. And when I made my "highest flights", I was not understood. Chorus: Who has stolen the Sun? Who has hidden the Moon? Who has closed up the Stars? Who has given us stenches to breathe & garbage to eat? Who is the author of our sorrows? First one says: I only know I "fell". Second one says: I did nothing to make it happen. First one: I did nothing to prevent it. Chorus: Pity us! First one: I am tunnel-wise & "blue-roof"-foolish. I carry a bag of stones which they would ridicule me for, up above. Second one: Do you never desire to go back? First one: I rise one level & at once I see the futility of further ascent. Second one: I did not even go that far. First one says: I have heard of those who went up two levels even, & they did not find joy. Chorus: They did not find joy. First one: There is peace in not having to know. Katr^ina speaks: When I first met the Vicar in a coffeehouse I thought: Here is someone who can take care of me. I had grown up parentless in an environment of random violence. Of course I'd made the necessary compromises. But now I'm beginning to rue the perfection of my plan. Do I really think there's a place for me somewhere? And can I buy it with a murder? He falls, & I run to him. I cry, I really do. The Vicar also runs, but away. I thought never to see him again. They say he asked about me a few times. I told them to say I was no more. Later I walk among the puppets so still in the firelight. Far beneath the City--the City of the Dead! When the Magician was a child he learned he was intensely powerful in being able to control others with words. He could make anyone do what he wanted, & they would think it was their own idea. But after awhile he decided to try succeeding in life without that advantage. The result was, that he was refused every good job he tried to "grasp"; & gradually he drifted into temporary jobs, one after the other. He even forgot that he had ever had that power. The coffeehouse. Morning. Me & Djuna & The Stranger & a woman who has just joined us, are discussing Magic. Apparently someone has left a voodoo doll in the store where i work. I'd said, "He can't be very dangerous if he has to resort to Magic." Djuna says, "But anyone nowadays who believes in such things could be a dangerous loon." The Stranger says, "In our time lots of people believe in some sort of magic." I snicker. "Fools abound." "Is everyone who believes in magic a fool?" he asks. I drink, & say, "Some deceive others; some deceive themselves. It's the same thing." He doesn't agree. "Parts of Magic are true & useful. We should study & learn to distinguish good magic." Then the new person speaks. "Everything that is said about the magic art is completely true. --Only if you believe in it. Otherwise it's not. The trouble today is that we can't believe anything strong or stern. So no intense magic exists. It's obvious." Djuna says, "You can't be serious! Such a view is neither logical nor arguably defensible." She says, "I'm not logical. I don't have to be." She says, "But how much easier it is to believe that your interlocutor is bereft of reason, than that they merely differ from you in the jib of their reasonableness! The same set of phenomena can be equally well described in many ways; & yet what do we struggle for, if not the supremacy of our vocabularies? So I am going to tell a story using unfamilar words, knowing you must translate it into familiar ones before you can understand what it means. Chorus: The Plague had long devastated the country. We had dwelt in the dark so long we could see without light. First one said: Blue-black or black-black world. I am a "picture of you", O Black One. I am your "rain". Chorus: There once was a wizard who thought he could not be defeated. First one: The flesh is sad, alas! & i've read all the grimoires. Chorus: Normally a wizard avoids other wizards. But this one felt safe. Then the wizard met a witch. Second one: Do you come here often? Chorus: In the upper city between suburban tracts runs a long grassy field. Along the field a row of tall electrical towers arrests the eye. Beneath the wires is a coffeehouse, dark enough for the night people & bright enough for the day people, where both worlds meet. First one: I don't create, I discover. Second one: What we don't find, we keep. What we find we discard. Chorus: She was a runner between the worlds, a carrier & a messenger. He did not understand the terms of her compact. First one: I want you irregardless. Chorus: --Irregardless. The Magician speaks: Myself am actually free of limitation. I choose & decide. Above all, I act. But this city has become a mystery to me. And my feelings chaotic. I don't know if it's day or night. I wander confused. Happy & weeping. She whom I love says we'll only be together if her compact is also my compact. The desert is wide. I pursue. Chorus: Two ghosts meet between the marble pillars of the coffeehouse. First one says: The first night of sleeplessness is called Saddener. Second one says: The second is called Embitterer. First one says: The third is called Hope Destroyer. Second one: Sea level sinks. The things in it will be revealed. First one: The desert is an ocean with its life underground. Chorus: The sound of acorns crunching underfoot. But the witch realized something. The conditions of her pact required that if a twosome became co-implicated, then that Event (fear!)(desire!) of their future might be greatly delayed. Oh she did NOT want that." "What happened then?" asked The Stranger. She smiled. "I forget." Djuna said, "That's not a very good story!" "Of course! Because it really happened." I was confused. I was still trying to figure out the big lujvo back there. Humans are only powerful in the ability to remove their identifying mind-part from their perceiving mind-part. This is all power & freedom, art & science. But when a magician uses this capability in observing a psychotic, that part of the mind that would defend against chaos is absent & the psychotic point of view is absorbed with invasive force. Art is also the mother of Obsession. "On the Other Side," she read, "you were with me & not with me. We could have stayed there. We could have been happy." The Vicar said nothing, but listened. "But our being together is prevented by the fact that that is false here where opposites are apart.
