Why is bei grammatically necessary? Why not make {broda lo brode be la
alis. la djan be'o} legal?

Well, I guess you could, but then be'o would basically never be
elidable except at the end of an utterance

Ahh, I see. And as it is, be'o is almost always elidable, right?

Right, unless the last thing in the list is a brivla that's followed
(out of the be-be'o) by a brivla. And since many many times you will
only be linking a single item, it makes more sense to let be'o be
elidable since you won't often need that bei anyhow (not because of
eliability, but because you're not often linking up that many sumti
