History: Lojban IRC

Preview of version: 3

Lojban IRC is on the Freenode IRC network (http://freenode.net)

Use irc.lojban.org for the server, port 6667. The channel is #lojban

There are almost always more than 10 people connected, but most of the time, they'll be idle. Say coi, and wait. Get a soda. Practice your vocabulary. But be patient. Dedicated IRC'ers don't sit in front of the computer 24/7 waiting to respond within 10 seconds of everything said. Think of it as sort of a fast moving message board.

If you need help with using IRC is general, check http://www.irchelp.com/

There are just a few rules, to make sure everything runs more smoothly:

  1. Don't engage in software vs software wars.
    • For instance, "vi vs emacs" or "java vs python" or "windows vs linux".
  2. Don't argue about copyright law.
    • Unless you've got a law degree. Expect to be asked to produce a scanned copy of your diploma.
  3. The previous two rules don't apply if you're speaking in Lojban.
    • The corallary is that you can speak any other language you please, as long as you're not breaking the above two rules. (Except for cein, who isn't allowed to use Sona, regardless of topic.)

You'll be warned if you break one of the rules. If you keep doing it, you'll get kicked, and quite possibly banned until everyone forgets why you're banned.

Old Stuff

"Not everyone knows how to use IRC. I'm trying to connect through the Trillian software. It's asking me to select a server to use when connecting to IRC. Do I pick one from the list at random? When I try to join this channel, nothing happens." — Matt

"Use the server irc.lojban.org:6667. If it's not there, add it." --LittleDan

Well, it says above which server to use: irc.lojban.org. If you have to specify a port, pick 6667 (but that's the default port for IRC so you shouldn't have to change it). If you try to join #lojban on another server than irc.lojban.org, then you probably won't get the same channel other people are talking about (unless you happen to pick a server on the same network). Specifically, picking an EFNet, DALnet, IRCNet, or Undernet server (to name four of the larger IRC networks) will not get you into the #lojban channel that other people use (joining #lojban will still succeed, since joining a non-existant channel creates it for as long as someone is in that channel, but you'll probably be the only one in the channel).
